While spending time under the sun spells fun, nationwide skin cancer statistics has quadrupled in a span of thirty years. In fact, according to Cancer Research UK, melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, is now reputed as the second most common cancer contracted by young people. More so, the organization’s studies showed that a single painful encounter with sunburn once every two years equates to a triple risk of getting melanoma. UV Awareness, a UV forecasting arm, revealed that sea foam accounts for 25% of UV reflection, while dry beach sand increases it by 15%. Though a cloudy sky may seem safer, don’t be fooled as 80% of damaging UV rays still effortlessly penetrate clouds.

But, it does not stop there. The harmful UV rays from the sun are amplified even in winter season. UV Awareness warns people of the unseen and unfelt perils of snow reflection reaction which brings up the notch of radiation to more than 80%. For those who love to ski and explore the alps, take note that as altitude increases, UV radiation shoots up by 10-12%.

On top of using sunscreen lotion, steering away from tanning beds, and getting a regular skin check, a seemingly overly simple yet very important tip to avoid skin cancer is by seeking shade. Remember that not all shades are created equally as a good number of them fail to repel the life-threatening damage caused by UVA and UVB rays. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the shade of a tree or a translucent covered area is not beneficial at all. The foundation encourages people to go for shades that are geared with complete protection such as opaque umbrellas and awnings with UV-repelling material.

Now that you know that skin cancer knows no seasons, seek a reliable all year round solution. Go for protection that is anchored on innovation that might just save you from this alarming condition.
