Injuries due to accidental falls are a problem nationwide. These usually happen to children who are four years old and below. According to The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), falls account for 44% of accident incurred by children. The most horrific cases from falls occur in areas with two levels or higher, and involve open windows and balconies.

RoSPA rouses the parents and guardians of these vulnerable children to take the necessary steps to invest on safety measures, improvements and innovations around their homes. Of course, the most favoured solution to prevent horrific falls is the undivided attention and supervision of adults at all times. On the odd yet interesting end of the solution to this equation lies real-life stories where heroes next-door got to save young lives with the aid of, surprisingly, a simple home improvement structure—an awning.

In the past decades, awnings have safeguarded homes from the harsh elements of the sun and the rain as it makes patios, verandas and even garages more conducive for tasks to be accomplished or leisurely activities we want to relish. Today, however, an uncommon and unusual yet impressive advantage of owning an awning comes into the picture. Because of its durability and dependability, awnings have indeed been the key to saving four children from an otherwise fatal fall. These four videos chronicle the unbelievable real-life testimonies where awnings saved the day and the babies, too.

STORY 1: The Father’s Fast and Fierce Instinct

CBS New York as cited in NewsCatcher31’s YouTube channel featured Qing Chen as he remembers his own daughter as he fearlessly climbed the awning to snatch an 18-month old baby girl in New York. The baby reportedly fell from their home which is fifteen feet above the ground. Chen acted fast and fiercely as he walked over the awnings where the baby crawled unknowingly.

STORY 2: The Safety Checklist gone out the Window

The parents of a baby boy thought that they have ticked all the items off their home safety checklist for their two children. Unfortunately though, windows are usually left unopened and almost forgotten. BBC News UK noted that in spite the six-storey fall, the baby boy managed to emerge unharmed.

STORY 3: Dad’s Perfect Catch, Daughter’s Perfect Match

Famed catches made by American baseball player Joe Torre took the front seat as his daughter Cristina caught a baby dangling from a frozen yogurt shop awning as recounted by CNN via BleacherReport.com. Who would have thought that a steady arm and a ready stance would bring home a baby safely?

STORY 4: Guardian Angels, Guardian Awnings

Mommy Tabatha emotionally recalled the moment she saw her baby fell out of the window with the blink of an eye. Her mother, who was smoking outside their home, instinctively got hold of the baby after the fall. Tabatha expressed via KXLY.com her intention to move to a house with only one floor to avoid such uneventful incident. As she thanked their guardian angels, her guardian awnings helped saved the baby’s life, too.

These four stories prove that with sturdy and properly installed awnings, your home or store can get added protection for the children during their most curious, most energetic stage in life. Next time you see an awning, take a step back and you might be the newest next-door hero too!
